An exciting new breakfast and lunch

Will post the video soon when I have charged the battery!

A bare cupboard forced the invention of a new breakfast today which luckily was a big success. I made some readybrek with less milk than it states so it was extra thick, I then mashed some banana and mixed it in. It was thick enough for JJ to messily scoop up and eat - he loved it (see the video!). I only made a half quantity as I expected him to reject it like he has done with normal ready brek, and he polished it off so quickly I had to hastily make some more (which he didnt eat in the end even though it was thicker and much better!).

Lunch was another big success! We tried mini pittas filled with grated carrot and grated cheese mixed with a bit of cumin and toasted. He loved them and ate 2 full ones. A good tip is to buy a pack of 10 mini pittas and freeze them indivdually. They defrost really quickly and I used to throw half a pack away as we didn't get through them. This way we always have some to hand! He also had the leftover banana readybrek mixed with some creamy greek yogurt - yumm - he loved it! It would make quite a substantial dessert for those days when he doesn't seem to have had much and is only keen on dessert!

Tea was baked cod, broccoli and pasta and pesto. He enjoyed this and ate a fair amount but not loads due to his huge lunch I think!

He also enjoyed a flying visit from Nanna and Grandad before bed - he sends you both a big sloppy kiss! xxx

leftovers!

It was my first day back at work today - I will just be working Wednesdays from now on and JJ will be spending the day with his daddy - Boys Fun Day as it is to be known!! (not sure how much fun he'll find it when JJ's grumpy, its raining and we have been up all night teething LOL!)

Anyway - it was only a teacher day today - no children in school - so I could leave a bit later and have breakfast with my boys ( I was a bit bleary eyed as JJ had me up at 1, 3, 5 and then from 5.30!!). He had 1 and a half weetabix.

DH said he also had a mammoth lunch - an adult size bowl of leftover shepherds pie and some nice veggies and a plum and some watermelon. I think swimming in the morning had made him hungry!

Tea was more leftovers of butternut squash but he wasn't interested. He had a bit of bread and philly and a big bowl of yogurt and banana. No milk all day, just bf this morning, water in the day and bf before bed.

He has been a bit happier today so fingers crossed we are past the worst!

shepherds pie

Didn't manage to post yesterday as we had a house full for a BBQ. JJ was pretty grizzly all day and didn't eat much breakfast or lunch. He did enjoy sweet potato, nectarine and greek yogurt with banana for tea though.

JJ had a good breakfast of a weetabix and a few oatibix bitesize. He also had about half a piece of toast at 11 which he stole from me!

Lunch was not touched at all. I had made him a butternut squash and red pepper casserole with french bread. He ate none of it. He has been so clingy and grumpy for a few days - not his usual bubbly self at all. I think it must be teeth (although there are no visible signs) as he seems to be vrying out in pain for a few mins. He is very cuddly which is lovely because he is normally to wriggly to cuddle for long - but I want my little boy back!

Tea surprisingly went down quite well. It was shepherds pie, cauli and cabbage. He ate quite a bit after a rocky start. He also had some homemade rice pudding which he really loved. Fingers crossed he will be back to normal tomorrow.

A day by the river

After a teeny piece of my cake!

Today we had a very odd day as JJ's Daddy was racing (triathlon) and so we went along to cheer him on. We had to leave the house at 6:00 so breakfast was taken on a park bench by the river! He had the usual oatibix and shredded wheat but didn't have a great deal as he was too busy people watching!

Lunch was at a cafe by the river after the race. They only did sandwiches so JJ had some brown bread and butter, a bit of lettuce and some other bits and bobs. Not great really - we thought we would be able to get him something more substantial.

Tea was baked sweet potato and butter, cheese omlette and watermelon. He seemed to really enjoy his tea.

JJ's daddy did very well in his race - coming 83rd out of 400+ and beating his last year's time by 8 mins - well done !!!

Saturday 25 August 2007

nothing very exciting!

Today JJ Had weetabix and oatibix for breakfast which he enjoyed and he had wuite a bit to eat.

Lunch was some little toasted slices of french bread topped with either philly or melted cheese. He loved the philly ones. He also had some watermelon - great big wedges of it which dribbled everywhere! He didn't eat a huge amount but didn't do too badly.

Tea was a spinach cheese and carrot muffin, roasted butternut squash, nectarine and some greek yogurt with banana. He didn't eat a great deal (a lot went in his mouth but a lot came out again too!). He is an odd little thing when it somes to banana - when I give him banana he bites bits off but spits them out. But he loves it mashed up with yogurt - odd!

Sorry for the lack of pictures recently - I couldn't find the camera but I have no located it so I will take pictures tomorrow!

Thursday 23 August 2007

Salmon

JJ had a weetabix for breakfast (realised at breakfast today I had been spelling weetabix wrong!) and a couple of oatibix.

For lunch he had just over a slice of philly on toast but got cross before any fruit.

He had some juicy watermelon in the afternoon with his friends who came over to play - he managed to drip it all over me!

For tea JJ had some cheesy mash, salmon, green beans and carrots. He was very tired again though and got too sleepy to eat any fruit again! Will make up for it tomorrow I am sure!

Wednesday 22 August 2007

soup

JJ had breakfast with his dad today who says he had a whole bowlful of oatabix, some blueberries and a suck of a strawberry.

Lunch was some nice homemade veggie soup - we cut the crust off a wholemeal loaf and cut it into fingers which we dunked in the soup for JJ who loved sucking it off. He also had some veg which I picked out before I whizzed the soup up - broccoli, chard and some carrot I think. He didn't have a very big lunch though - again!

For tea JJ enjoyed some 'chicken in a bag' a la Jamie Oliver (see recipes) and 2 jacket potatoes with cheese. He also had a plum and half a pear. Yum Yum!

Tuesday 21 August 2007

Cous cous 'sausages'

I thought I would try something different today for breakfast so we had wheatabix (not ground breaking I know!). They don't do mini plain wheatabix so I broke a big one up into a few bits and dunked it like I do with the oatibix. He seemed to really enjoy it and ate the lot as well as about 8 exta oatibix bitesize. All in all a good breakfast.

Lunch was a bit of a non starter. I was very proud of my new lunch inventions - cous cous 'sausages' - but he wasn't in a lunch mood - nothing would tempt him today - not the cous cous, not strawberries, not yogurt. So we called it a day. The cous cous was great though - I cooked the cous cous and mixed some with mashed sardines and cream cheese and formed it into sausage shapes, the rest I mixed with hummus and did the same. They worked really well and make a nice quick lunch and a change from bread and the usual. I will put the proper recipe on the recipe blog.

Tea was cottage pie, broccoli, cabbage, carrots ( and another cous cous sausage). JJ loved it but was not really in an eating mood again but he did better than lunch. Hopefully he will be back on track tomorrow - I guess too much breakfast spoiled him!

Monday 20 August 2007

Carrot pancakes

JJ had breakfast with his dad again and apparently wouldn't touch the shredded wheat - it was oatibix all the way!

Lunch was a new invention of mine - carrot pancakes - they went down a treat spread with soft cheese. Will add them to the recipe blog. They we accompanied by possibly the biggest plum in history.

For tea JJ had a bit of a mixed bag of cow and gate breadsticks and hummus, some chicken, tomato, cucumber, tiger bread, cherries and kiwi. He didn't really eat the fruit though just sucked and spat it out - this is the trick of the week. I am not worried though, he will move onto another bizarre habit soon.

Other news:
He is really good at waving now. He will do it spontaneously rather than just copy. We went into the bedroom today and JJ heard his daddy in the bathroom but couldn't see him and he waved at the door - so cute and clever!

Sunday 19 August 2007

Lunch with friends and comedy carrots!

JJ's daddy gave him the usual breakfast today.

Lunch was lovely as we had some of our friends over so JJ sat with the 8 of us and had some homemade burgers (lamb and mint and beef burgers) - he wasn't into them but we enjoyed them! He also had some hummus on toast - a big hit - he generally sucked the hummus off and spat out the toast though (continuing yesterday's game!). He had some nectarine and blueberries for pud.

Tea tonight was lentil mash, sugarsnap peas, baby corn and carrots. He was very vocal all through tea and had some very funny carrot moments which I captured on video. They really didn't want to be eaten!!!

For pud I nuked some blueberries in the microwave for 1 min and mixed them with greek yogurt. He quite enjoyed them but prefers his blueberries au naturale!

Saturday 18 August 2007

Lunch? Cherries

Peek-a-boo!

JJ enjoyed a nice breakfast before we set off on our LOOOOOONG journey.

I cannot for the life of me remember what he had for lunch (I am writing this a day late) so it can;t have been very remarkable.

Tea was roasted parsnip and sweet potato, and a spinach, cheese and carrot muffin which I had defrosted (they freeze very well). He quite enjoyed his tea but has a new favourite game which is chew and suck each bit to death and then spit/pull it out of his mouth. He has just learned to do this and seems determined to practice it whenever possible. He had some nice cherries for pud but wasn't too impressed.

Friday 17 August 2007

fun in the sun!

Well we had another exciting day at the seaside with our friends. JJ wasn't too fussed about breakfast this morning - he had about half a bowl and some nectarine.

Lunch was a little picnic on a bench at some paddling pools. JJ had some french bread and butter, blueberries and nectarine and a biscuit which was thrown on the floor. He seemed to really enjoy eating with other children. He also had a bit of my fish, batter removed, on the sand (oh an a teeny tiny piece of doughnut, shhh don't tell his daddy!)

For tea JJ had some broccoli, cod and potatoes. Fir pud he had some mashed banana mixed with Greek yogurt which he really enjoyed.
We have had a lovely couple of days house sitting by the sea and are heading home tomorrow. Other news JJ learnt to wave yesterday - he is very cute doing it. He is sooooo close to crawling now too but has been for a couple of weeks. Today he actually picked up one hand and moved it forward but couldn't figure out how to move the other one! Maybe tomorrow he will get it!

Thursday 16 August 2007

Seaside fun!

JJ's daddy gave him breakfast today as I was packing to go to the seaside for a couple of days with some friends. He had the usual plus some rather juicy watermelon (judging by the colour of his sleepsuit).

Lunch was unfortunately another omlette! We arrived at my parents where we are house sitting and there wasn't much BLW friendly food in so an omlette it was and he ate the lot despite having a big BF just before. He also ate a fair few blueberries.

After an afternoon on the rather windy yet pleasant beach, JJ enjoyed his favourite pasta with cheese sauce and just about ate his own body weight in pasta! He also had some mango and a few more blueberries for good measure.

He then had a bath with his friends Lola and Rosie which he found very exciting! We might even have an ice cream tomorrow! (bad mummy!!)

Wednesday 15 August 2007

Omlette

JJ had an interested breakfast today - I took some video as I never really pay much attention to breakfast on here but was often the meal which caused the most stress so thought it might be helpful to others to see him eating - However he had a really bad breakfast and generally just threw stuff on the floor - typical!

Lunch was an omlette - a first for JJ. He has never had proper eggs before - just eggs in other things like pancakes. He had a cheese omlette and loved it. He also had some mango and a cheese and apple scone left over from yesterday.

For tea JJ had some mash, carrot and mackerel. He loved the carrot and fish but was not so keen on the mash toady. He also had some yogurt and some pear. It could have been the longest meal in history - he was definitely on a go slow!

Tuesday 14 August 2007

Yummy scones and lasagne

JJ had a good breakfast and for lunch enjoyed some homemade cheese, oat and apple scones. He really liked them (as did I) and managed to eat 3 small ones. He also had some mango which he loves but now he is used to being able to eat most things with ease, got pretty frustrated at the slippery pieces.

For tea we all had some cannelloni (made with sheets of lasagne) stuffed with spinach and ricotta in a tomato sauce and topped with cheese. Yum. JJ liked it but didn't eat huge amounts of the pasta - mostly the filling. He also had some rice pudding and some blueberries (surprise, surprise!).

He seems to have got his appetite back.

I will get going on the recipe blog I promise!

Monday 13 August 2007

From bad to good!

I thought JJ had a good breakfast today until I took his pelican bib off to find half of it in there! He doesn't normally drop much at breakfast! He did have 2 good BFs before breakfast though!

Lunch was lovely for us but a bit rubbish for JJ unfortunately. We went to a lovely pub and I ordered a nice margherita pizza and roasted root veg to share with JJ but he was not a happy bunny. He didn't like the seat he was in ( a handysit I think - we loved it but he wanted to rest back and couldn't) so he had a bit of pizza sitting on his dad's lap and that was it.

He did however, have a very large tea! He had homemade turkey and apple sausages x 2, lots of mash, broccoli with cheese sauce, a bowl of yogurt and 3 handfuls of blueberries! It definately made up for the rest of the day.

I also took some video of his 2 spoon swap technique for eating yogurt. I had to prop the camera up on some tea towels so its a bit of a dodgy angle. Just after this he discovered that if he went to throw the spoon on the floor he could get me to give it to him quicker - I had to work hard to keep up! When he did throw his spoon on the floor (I paused for breath!) he decided to thank me for picking it up by stroking my hair with his mashy, cheesy, yogurty hands - nice!

(will post soon)

Sunday 12 August 2007

Good food day and another tooth

Yummy scrummy drop scones

JJ actually trying to eat his fist!

JJ has got his second tooth today and he is eating well again - not a coincidence methinks!

He had a good breakfast of the usual. For lunch he had some philly on toast with some ham but mostly scoffed down drop scones (as did I and his daddy!) - they were rater fluffy and yummy. He also had some nectarine

For tea he had some griddled chicken breast which he seemed to enjoy (he isn't normally too fussed about chunks of meat), a cheesy jacket potato, some steamed veg (from those little frozen steam packets - not bad in a rush) and some watermelon. It all went down quite well apart from the sweetcorn which he didn't even entertain. And he didn't fall asleep tonight!

Saturday 11 August 2007

Sweet potato cake, more sleep eating!

JJ had the usual breakfast and ate quite a bit.

For lunch JJ had a sweet potato cake (left over baked sweet potato mashed up, coated in breadcrumbs and fried in butter) which he loved. He also had the first of my home grown courgettes, a million blueberries and some watermelon. He is loving blueberries and watermelon at the minute - it is officially the biggest and juiciest watermelon ever and as soon as he picks a chunk up it runs down his arm!

For tea JJ had some philly on toast, half a cinnamon and raisin bagel, some vanilla yogurt and more fruit - a bit of a hotch potch really but he enjoyed most of it but was tired again and had another go at sleeping while eating! It is the funniest and cutest thing to watch.

Friday 10 August 2007

2 tired meals - 2 different outcomes! Fab video

This has got to be JJ's cutest video yet - my sleepy little boy!

Back home and back to normal JJ had a good breakfast of the usual today after a little lie in till 7.30.

Lunch today was chicken and salad with some crusty bread. However JJ missed his morning nap as he was late up and we went food shopping so he was too tired to eat much and just got very upset and we cut lunch short. I gave him a rice pudding when he woke up before we dashed to story time at the library - he loved it!

Tea today was bean and veg hot pot with baked sweet potato, and watermelon and blueberries. JJ was really enjoying his tea and making lots of 'mmmm' sounds but then started actually falling asleep whilst eating. I am sure he was sleep eating at one point. So another meal cut short today but he wasn't upset this time - just couldn't keep his eyes open! This has to be the cutest video ever!

I think JJ may have another tooth on its way as he is not eating very well and has eczema round his mouth which appeared shortly before a tooth last time - it is soooo frustrating that he was eating so well and so enthusiastically and then he takes 2 steps back - ah well guess that's babies for you! I know he will start chomping down his food again when he is ready.

Woops! Sorry we're late!

Sorry for the delay but we have been back home ot visit the grandparents and couldn't post while we were away. Think I can remember...

Tuesday - usual breakfast, then some yummy spinach, carrot and cheese muffins which I baked - sound gross but tasted lovely and JJ had 1 and a half for his lunch with some fruit.

For tea he had mackerel and cheese tarts and grated carrot - he was not impressed by the carrot. He would go to pick it up and then pull a disgusted face, drop it and eat something else.

Wednesday we were at JJ's nanna and grandad's house - usual breakfast, lunch was another muffin with some fruit - he wasn't very interested in either. For tea he had pasta and cheese sauce - another of his favourites but again he wasn't very interested. He did enjoy a few grapes though and managed to drink from his doidy on his own (and then threw water all over himself which me and his Nanna found highly amusing!).

Thursday was again not very successful on the food front but we had a lovely time at JJ's aunty Kelly's wedding! He had some cheesy mash, broccoli and carrot for lunch - he loved the broccoli. He had very little for tea as it was bits and bobs from the buffet but he was more interested in playing with his cousins - never mind!

Monday 6 August 2007

Quesadillas!

JJ had his usual breakfast.

We enjoyed a lovely lunch outside in the sunshine. We had quesadillas (like a taosted tortilla sandwich - wil post the recipe in the recipe section) - JJ had double cheese and spinach and me and dh had pepperoni, cheese and tomato. I wasn't sure JJ would manage them too well but he thought they were great and gobbled lots up. We tried one of my lovingly made smoothie lollies on him again and once again he refuses to hold the tissue and so gets frozen hands which makes him cry - oh well me and DH will have to eat them!

Tea was a bit of a rushed affair as we were out buying new camping gear and trying on back carriers for JJ. He had some fresh beef ravioli and I whizzed up some leftover aubergine from yesterday to make a quick sauce. He sucked them to death but ate very little. He did eat a WHOLE nectarine (I was very excited by this!), some banana (although he seems to enjoy just biting this into chunks), a biscuit and a baby rice cake - which he put in whole but eventully managed to eat it!

Skills update!

JJ now moves bits of food out of his way in order to get what he wants. He sees a piece he wants and will do anything to get at it even if other pieces are nearer/easier. He uses a two handed approach to trickier stuff - grasping it in one hand and supporting it (aka shoving it in) with the other. He swaps food from one hand to the other to get a better grip of it. He put the little bits in his palm back down then pincer grips them to eat them. Such a clever boy! Doesn't seem 5 mins since it was a major just to get food in his mouth.

Sunday 5 August 2007

Malt loaf monster!

JJ had a good breakfast again - he seems to have taken to breakfasts now.

For lunch he had some philly on toast with tomatoes and melon. We usually give him chip shapes or small chunks of melon but today gave him a big wedge with the skin off. He loved it this way and slowly ate the lot and then had some more.

Tea was rather funny - we were having aubergine casserole with couscous and so we gave JJ the same. He found the cous cous very interesting and a little frustrating so I had a brainwave of mixing it with some philly to make it a bit more clumpy and sticky which helped (however DH decided he like his this way too!). He quite enjoyed the casserole and was gobbling up chunks of aubergine, pepper and mushroom. He did find it difficult to shovel it in like he does pasta though. He made such a mess - and going for the 'messiest dinner in blw history' record we decided to top it off with some yogurt - well received as usual.
He still seemed hungry so he had a slice of malt loaf - and just like Eric and bananaman (for those children of the 80's among you) when JJ ate the malt loaf he turned into a growling malt loaf monster (see the very cute video) - a sign, I think, that he liked it.

He was so incredibly messy he was plonked straight into the bath with his dad!

He is eating sooo well at the moment - it is lovely and for those of you out there doing blw and worrying if your LO is having enough - they do get there I promise! It can seem hard at first when they seem to eat so little but stick with it. (the question is will I remember this pearl of wisdom next time he goes off his food a bit...probably not!)

Saturday 4 August 2007

3 good meals

JJ had the usual for breakfast but today preferred the good old shredded wheat over the oatibix. He has mastered the technique of noisily sucking out all the milk before gobbling them up.

Lunch was leftover pasta bolognese from yesterday which was munched up with the same enthusiasm and left him looking like an oompa loompa (but without the green hair!). He followed this with various fruits.

For tea JJ tried something new - salmon - which he had with the ever popular broccoli and a cheesy jacket potato. He gobbled the lot much to the disappointment of his dad who wanted more! He ate some salmon but was not overly impressed - he much preferred the broccoli and potato. He followed this with some delicious honeydew melon. He has only bf twice today (plus a 30 second drink) so he must be filling his tum with food.
Other News:
JJ is very close to crawling - here he is today showing of his 'all fours' technique - rocking backwards and forwards no less! He is sooo cute!

The look of concentration!

Friday 3 August 2007

Lunch in the sun, more pasta and a lolly!

JJ was somewhat irritated by the piece of bread stuck to the end of his nose!

trying to pick up the teensiest tiniest piece of onion

Look at my lovely lolly!

JJ's daddy was in charge of the usual breakfast.

Lunch was lovely as we all had lunch outside at our new table (hastily erected 30 seconds before lunch). JJ seems to enjoy eating outside - he had some pitta and philly, lettuce, tomato, apricot and nectarine oh and some new potato. As usual he had some but not a huge amount. Getting to be quite a pattern at lunch time.

For tea JJ had some pasta bolognese - it was supposed to be spaghetti (we were quite looking forward to seeing how he dealt with spaghetti!) but we had run out so pasta it was - again! Anyway he loved it - I'm sure he's Italian at heart! he had quite a lot of the meat too which is good for iron.

I made some smoothie lollies earlier in the day (whizzed up 2 plums, 1 nectarine, 2 apricots, a banana, a pot of yogurt and some milk and poured into moulds) and JJ's daddy had one for pudding which JJ had a suck of and loved so we gave him his own. He really liked it but got a bit cross when his hands got cold and I think he got brain freeze from shoving it in his mouth! He enjoyed it though and quite healthy really!

Thursday 2 August 2007

A whole lot of pasta!!

JJ had quite a good breakfast today - Oatibix are definitely his favourite at the minute.

For lunch JJ had some veggie nuggets (the last of my stash), an apricot, some ham and some tomato. He barely ate a thing - I put this down to his teeth and needing the loo half way through.

He made up for it this tea time though as he munched his way through a mountain of pasta with cheese sauce (I froze a couple of portions of sauce from the last lot I made and it worked really well). He had almost as much as I would eat! He also had a fair bit of broccoli and some carrot. He even licked out the bowl (see the video - so cute). This must be his favourite meal.

Sorry it's late! exciting discovery....

Can't remember Tuesday now so it can't have been very exciting food wise - I didn't post as I was out (OMG!) watching Hairspray - total chick flic and was brilliant.

Anyway yesterday (no excuses I'm afraid was just totally shattered and couldn't be bothered to turn on the computer!), was usual breakfast. For lunch we went for a picnic in the country park near us as the weather was so glorious. JJ had some cheese straws which went down very well, some cheese and a selection of fruit (and a sneaky bit of mummy's ice cream). Not much got eaten as there were far too many interesting people to watch but he enjoyed it! Tea was baby jacket potatoes with cheese, peas and fish cakes. He didn't really eat much but we found his first tooth which could explain why - very exciting!

I couldn't find the camera so no photos I'm afraid.
